Greeks, Pontus, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans had preserved and strengthened the castle during their reign. The oldest documents regarding the use of the castle as a prison date back to 1568. Evliya Çelebi mentioned this prison in his travelogue as; “It’s a huge and scary castle. It has 300 iron gates, giant guardians, notorious prisoners hanged from their arms to grates. Guardians take a walk on the paths like dragons. For God’s sake, they don’t even allow birds to fly around the place, it’s impossible to escape.”

The inner castle was turned into a prison in 1887 officially. Veysel Pasha added hammam as well as the new building to this structure during his period. A new building was also added in 1939 to use this place as a prison for children.
